Malaucène

Malaucène is a large town, with the newer part built around the walled old town.

The huge 14th century fortified church has an interesting multi-pillared clock tower, and there's an old belltower on one of the entrance portes through the old wall.

Malaucène is the start of one of the three routes to the summit of Mont Ventoux, and so is very populular with cyclists, as well as motorcyclists, hikers and other visitors. There's an abundance of local shops, and the many terrace cafés are shaded by plane trees that are several hundred years old.

With the town center full of shops, cafés and people, the Medieval old town is quieter but very interesting. You'll find narrow streets, old buildings, ancient doorways, and quite a few old lavoirs and fountains.

Malaucène was a fortified town in the 14th century, which can be seen today with the semi-circular wall of houses surrounding the east side of the village, along with some traces of the defensive walls. On the south side of town is the Medieval Porte Soubeyran, where the road leaves Malaucène towards Bedoin.
