The Cevennes national park is located in the low mountains, it is home to a significant permanent population and cultural heritage. It has about 76,000 inhabitants. 600 live in the core area strictly protected by law. The Park – created in a sparsely populated region that had, for over a century, been subject to an intense population exodus – has seen positive net migration since the 1990s.
The National Park offers up a mosaic of landscapes. It's a privileged place for outdoor activities. Over 5,000 signposted kilometres of paths may be explored on foot, mountain bike or horseback. The National Park has three Eco-Museums which are an invitation to discover the atmosphere of each area by way of indoor or outdoor visits.
The Nature Festival comprises a programme of events running from March to November each year. The festival is open to all and the programme offers a rich variety of activities : short hikes, walks with rangers or storytellers, skills workshops, exhibitions, conferences, nature watches…
The National Park is a signatory of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas. It has committed itself to a form of tourism that contributes more to the protection and development of natural and cultural heritage.
The National Park was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1985. A Biosphere Reserve reconciles preserving biodiversity with promoting economic and social development and maintaining related cultural values.
