Ethnographic and archeological museum situated in the historical centre of Châteauponsac. The museum was founded in 1942 and set up in a former Benedictine priory. The priory was restored in 1974 and is located in the historical town centre of Chateauponsac.
In the 18 rooms of this museum, you can see what everyday life was like in this area known as the Basse Marche during the 19th century. You can see the living room of a traditional house, an exhibition showing a Limousin wedding, and old pictures from the area, etc…
The collections within the museum are exceptional. Crafts and traditional professions from the period are a main focus in the exhibition. Thanks to various reconstructed scenes, like the shoemaker’s workshop and the local kitchen, you are able to discover daily rural life in the Limousin during the 19th century. Other rooms present the history of Châteauponsac from prehistoric times and display gallo-roman remains. Many minerals and fossils are on display too.
