Château de Bonneval is located in the picturesque village of Coussac-Bonneval, and is the formal home of the Marquis de Bonneval, one of France’s oldest noble families; as well as being the headquarters of the historic marquisate.
Because of its location in the centre of the village, the château is frequently mistakenly called “Château de Coussac-Bonneval”.
The château building is, by itself, interesting as it showcases the changes in architectural design from early-mediaeval stronghold, to Renaissance palace, to an elegant stately home of La Belle Époque. However, the captivating aspect is more about the role of château providing a back-drop to the involvement of the Bonneval family in some of the key moments in French history.
The château is unique in that the establishment has been in the ownership of the same family for over 1000 years. In recognition of the significance as a heritage site and tourism destination; the beauty of its interior; and, the quality and variety of its contents; the château was adjudged to be one of the 3 most important locations in the Limousin Region, by the assessors of the “Favourite Monuments of France 2014” project.
