Château Fort de Fleckenstein

Fleckenstein is a mighty, imposing Castle standing proud on a rocky outcrop 100 m long at an altitude of 338 m. The Castle ruins occupy a remarkable setting from which you can observe the Valley of the River Sauer. Built in the 12th century and located in the Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges, Fleckenstein is an impregnable fortress. Its military objective was to ensure the surveillance of the roads linking Alsace and Lorraine and protect Haguenau. It stood its ground for 4 centuries before being destroyed in 1680 by French troops. In spite of everything, the square tower and rooms carved into the cliff face remain in a good state of repair. Today, it ranks as the most visited ruins in Alsace with nearly 100,000 visitors every year.
